Toronto: In a significant push to deepen India-Canada economic engagement, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in partnership with the Consulate General of India, Toronto, and the Canada India Business Council (CIBC), organized a High-Level Roundtable in Toronto on 26 August 2026, bringing together top policymakers and business leaders from both nations to chart the future of bilateral investment and trade.

The centrepiece of the discussion was an address by Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon’ble Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Government of India, who outlined the depth and resilience of India’s economic story to a room of Canadian investors, institutional heads, and policymakers.

The roundtable drew a formidable line-up of dignitaries, including Mr. Dinesh K. Patnaik, High Commissioner, High Commission of India in Canada; Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran, Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India; Mr. K. Rajaraman, Chairperson, International Financial Services Centre Authority (IFSCA); Mr. Amit Singla, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs; Mr. Manoj Muttathil Ayappan, Joint Secretary, Department of Financial Services; and Mr. Sanjiv Agarwal, Managing Director & CEO, National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF).

Representing the host institutions were Mr. Mahaveer Singhvi, Consul General, Consulate General of India, Toronto; Mr. Pranav Kapuria, Chairman, CII-National Future Tech Manufacturing Mission and Chairman-Designate, CII-New Delhi (Managing Director, The Hi-Tech Gears Ltd.); and Mr. Victor Thomas, President and CEO, Canada India Business Council.

A Partnership Anchored in Fundamentals

The discussions underscored the growing complementarity between the two economies. Speakers pointed to India’s robust growth trajectory, macroeconomic stability, expanding infrastructure base, deep pool of skilled talent, and vast domestic market as the foundation for a more substantive economic partnership with Canada — one that goes beyond trade volumes to structural, long-term collaboration.

Participants identified critical minerals, energy, manufacturing, technology, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and innovation as priority sectors where Canadian capital and expertise could find natural synergy with India’s development trajectory — particularly as global supply chains continue to be reconfigured around resilience and diversification.

Reading the Moment

The timing of the roundtable is notable. As Canadian institutional investors — among the world’s largest pools of pension and infrastructure capital — look to deploy long-term capital in markets offering scale and stability, India’s positioning as a hedge against global uncertainty was a recurring thread. The presence of IFSCA’s Chairperson and NIIF’s CEO at the table signals that the conversation extended beyond broad economic diplomacy into the specifics of financial architecture — GIFT City’s role as a gateway for cross-border capital, and NIIF’s mandate as a vehicle for channelling foreign institutional investment into Indian infrastructure.

For Canada, the calculus is equally clear: a strategic economic relationship with India offers diversification away from overexposure to any single market, and a foothold in one of the fastest-growing large economies in the world.

The ChangeMakers Perspective

Roundtables of this scale — spanning a sitting Union Finance Minister, India’s Chief Economic Adviser, senior bureaucracy from two ministries, and the country’s apex diplomatic and financial regulatory figures — are rare outside G20 or bilateral summit settings. Their occurrence on Canadian soil, hosted jointly with Indian diplomatic missions and industry bodies, reflects a deliberate, sustained diplomatic effort to move India-Canada relations toward an economic footing insulated from episodic political friction.

The ChangeMakers Magazine will continue to track the concrete outcomes of this dialogue — particularly any announcements on capital commitments, MoUs, or sector-specific investment pipelines emerging from the roundtable in the weeks ahead.
